Turkish Towels for Yoga and Spa: Uses and Care

A Turkish towel, also called a peshtemal, can be part of a yoga or spa bag for drying off or wrapping up after a shower. Choose it by its stated size, fabric and care instructions. The name alone does not establish that it is suitable as a yoga mat or a non-slip mat cover.

What can you use it for?

Use a towel for drying hands or the body, or as a wrap between activities if its dimensions provide the coverage you want. Check the facilities’ rules before taking it into a sauna or spa. For use on exercise equipment, follow the equipment or mat maker’s guidance.

How do you choose the right towel?

Compare the listed measurements with your intended use and the space in your bag. Read the composition for the particular model; Turkish towels do not all have the same weave or fibre blend. Colour, pattern and fringe style can help you choose a design you enjoy using.

Can a Turkish towel replace a yoga mat?

Do not assume so. A towel’s description does not establish its grip, cushioning or suitability for a particular floor. Use a mat intended for your practice and follow its instructions. Only use an added towel or cover in the way the mat manufacturer recommends.

How should you wash and pack it?

Follow the product’s care label for washing temperature, detergent and drying. Let it dry completely before storing it in a closed bag. There is no single washing schedule or drying time that applies to every towel and every use.

Where can you compare the options?
