8 Ways to Use a Turkish Towel at Home and Away
A Turkish towel, also called a peshtemal or hammam towel, can serve several everyday purposes. Choose a use that fits your towel’s actual size, composition and care instructions; not every towel has the same properties.
1. Beach towel
Use it for drying off or sitting on the beach. Check the dimensions before choosing a size to lie on.
2. Poolside wrap
Wrap a suitably sized towel around yourself after swimming. Secure it comfortably; a wrap is not a flotation aid.
3. Bath towel
Use it to dry off after a bath or shower. Check the product’s fibre composition rather than assuming that every Turkish towel is wool or cotton.
4. Picnic cloth
Spread it on a clean, dry surface for a picnic. A towel is not a waterproof groundsheet.
5. Exercise towel
Keep it nearby for drying hands or wiping perspiration. Do not assume that it provides the grip or stability of a purpose-designed exercise mat.
6. Light lap cover
Drape it over your legs while sitting outdoors or on the sofa, if the size and thickness suit you.
7. Adult scarf or shawl
Fold or drape a suitable towel over your shoulders. Keep loose ends clear of moving equipment and flames.
8. Decorative table covering
Use a clean towel to add pattern to a table. Keep it away from candles and hot cookware.
Uses not recommended
Do not improvise a baby carrier from a towel. This guide no longer recommends towels as infant sleep blankets. The CPSC advises keeping loose blankets out of infant sleep spaces. Read the CPSC safe sleep guidance.
