How to Wash and Care for Wool Blankets the Right Way

At Trimita, we believe natural wool deserves mindful care. Wool blankets are beautifully soft, breathable, and durable — yet they require the right maintenance to last for generations. This guide explains how to clean, dry, and store wool blankets safely, preserving both texture and warmth.

1. Air It Out, Don’t Overwash

Frequent washing can harm wool’s natural fibres. Instead, let your blanket breathe. Shake it gently outdoors and hang it in a shaded, breezy spot. Regular airing removes dust and odours without water or detergent — a method even recommended by The Woolmark Company.

2. Spot Clean with Care

If a spill occurs, act quickly. Wool naturally repels moisture, but stains can settle over time. Use lukewarm water and a wool-safe detergent. Blot gently with a soft cloth and never rub — friction can cause felting or stretch the weave. For light marks, dab softly until the surface feels clean again.

3. Wash Gently (If Needed)

Check the care label first. If it’s machine-washable, select the wool or delicate cycle with cold water (20–30°C) and minimal spin. Avoid bleach or softeners. For hand washing, use cold water with a mild detergent and press the fibres gently — never wring. IKEA and Woolmark both recommend small loads and gentle motion to protect the texture.

4. Dry Flat and Avoid Heat

Wool must dry slowly and evenly. Roll your blanket in a towel to remove excess water, then lay it flat on a clean surface away from sunlight or radiators. Never tumble dry — heat can shrink or harden wool. Once dry, brush the surface lightly with a soft garment brush to revive its natural fluff.

5. Store for Longevity

Proper storage keeps wool fresh year-round. Fold the blanket neatly and place it in a breathable cotton bag. Add a few cedarwood chips or lavender sachets to deter moths naturally. Avoid sealing in plastic — it traps moisture and can cause odour. Store in a cool, dry, and shaded area.

What to Avoid

  • Hot water or aggressive spin cycles
  • Direct sunlight or radiator heat
  • Bleach, softeners, or fabric conditioners
  • Hanging while wet (causes stretching)

Caring for Wool Is Caring for Nature

Mindful maintenance reduces washing frequency, energy use, and fibre waste — making wool a true ally of sustainable living. Each Trimita wool blanket is woven in Denizli, Türkiye, using OEKO-TEX® certified fibres and traditional craftsmanship — designed to bring lasting comfort and timeless warmth to every home.
